History of Hartland & Co.

Hartland & Co. was founded in 1989 by Tom Hartland. Tom was a pioneer in independent investment consulting. His early backers and he believed that independence in structure and spirit was essential to objective and effective service to clients. Even as the firm has grown and expanded services to private clients, this commitment to independence remains strong. To this day we remain free of affiliations with brokerage firms, banks or money managers.  We have no revenue sharing arrangements and are not part of a larger financial services company.

In 2009, Chief Executive Tom Hartland and the board of directors decided to invest further in the leadership of the firm. Dave Fulton, a 25-year industry veteran, was hired as President. In addition to Dave, several outstanding people have joined Hartland & Co., including Carl Tippit, Greg AlthansSatricia Rice and Tom Allen. They have joined an outstanding group of Hartland & Co. professionals.

In 2010 Hartland & Co. became certified by the Centre for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX).  CEFEX is an international standards body that provides independent recognition of a firm's conformity to defined Standards of Practice.  Each year, an auditor from CEFEX visits Hartland & Co. to test our compliance with these standards.  We are proud to be one of the only firms of our type that is compliant with CEFEX standards.

In 2011 Hartland & Co. merged with Chess Financial Corporation.  Chess was a leading private wealth advisory business, focused on providing tax, estate and financial counsel integrated with investment advice.  The merger with Chess added to the capabilities of Hartland & Co. in serving private clients.

Our firm is guided by a strong Board of Directors. These Directors, many of whom are shareholders, have had distinguished careers in private equity, banking, corporate finance, law and marketing. Their sage guidance has been important to the success and growth of Hartland & Co.
